This tour takes you from medieval Kalkar to the pilgrimage town of Marienbaum and past the Roman city of Xanten. The route is not very easy to reach by train from the Netherlands, but is located on the Hanseatic Route – so you can just cycle there! The Collection with the entire Hanseatic City Cycle Route can be found here: komoot.nl/collection/1193811You will start today in cozy Kalkar with its beautiful historical monuments. After a tour around the church you cycle out of the city over the Sebastianuswall. You soon drive through the vast fields where the miles fly by. You go like a train, not surprising since this cycle path goes over the former railway track. There is a lot to experience in Xanten, but the most special attraction is the Archaeological Park Xanten (APX) with the ruins of a Roman city. In the Archaeological Park you get an idea of what life in a Roman city was like. There is a temple, the amphitheatre, the gates, the city walls, the Roman inn and several houses of craftsmen. The park also has a museum where archaeological finds are exhibited. In the center of Xanten you will travel to the Middle Ages around the market square and the cathedral. Xanten is a place of pilgrimage that has been drawing pilgrims to St. Victor's Dom (also known as Xanten Cathedral) since the Middle Ages. You leave this historic city via the harbor and drive along the Xantener Südsee back into our own era. You cycle along the water and see the sailing boats glide by on the lake. Then you reach the Rhine and cycle over the dike again. Now you don't see sailboats, but mainly large ships sailing by on the other side. If you want to enjoy the view even more, you can settle down at the Unser Lieblingscafe directly on the dike. The last part back towards Kalkar goes through the open countryside and small villages again.
