Oorsprong Grotto

Highlight • Structure

One of the falls fell into a 'cave', a house through which the stream flowed high and broke up in a wide curtain of water at the front. In the so-called cave house you could walk under the stream and look out through the waterfall. To the west of the stream stood the tavern 'De Oorsprong', a popular place to have a drink in the 19th century.

Tuin de Lage Oorsprong

Highlight • Structure

The De Lage Oorsprong estate once had a beautiful garden 'with the select fruit trees and a wealth of fine vegetables and fragrant flowers'. Unfortunately, not much of this beauty remained after the airborne landings of September 1944. What remains is a piece of history. Enthusiastic Oosterbekers picked up this history again and restored it to the beautiful oasis it is today. In May 2008 Tuin de Lage Oorsprong opened its doors again.

Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

After the Normandy landings in June 1944, the Allied advance through Northern Europe was extremely rapid and on September 11, 1944, the Second Army invaded the Netherlands just south of Eindhoven, the first Allied forces to set foot in the country since the fall in May 1940.

Their next objective was to cross the Rhine before the Germans had time to reorganize after their recent setbacks, by securing the rivers and canals in their path at Grave, Nijmegen and Arnhem. 'Operation Market Garden' would involve the United States 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the 1st Commonwealth Airborne Division and the Polish Parachute Brigade.

On September 17, 1944, the 1st Airborne Division began landing west of Arnhem, but German resistance, bad weather and problems with supplies and reinforcements led to heavy losses and their objectives were not captured. They were forced to form a perimeter at Oosterbeek, which they stubbornly held until September 25, when it was decided to withdraw the remnants of the division across the Lower Rhine.

Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery contains the graves of most of those killed during the September landings, and many of those who died in later fighting in the area.

There are now 1,684 Commonwealth soldiers of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 243 of the graves are unidentified and two victims are commemorated by special memorials. There are also 79 Polish, three Dutch and four non-war graves (including three former Commission employees) in the cemetery.
