Today was mostly downhill. After six weeks in the highlands, I’ve finally left the Armenian Highlands behind. You can see the difference in the landscape: more trees again, and the temperatures are getting warmer. Up in the highlands, the nights had become pretty cold lately, with frequent rain.
On the way, I met a retired Czech couple cycling from Yerevan to Istanbul, and we rode together for a short stretch. There are plenty of little stories worth remembering. Today’s took place at a gas station, where I stopped for an instant coffee. I got chatting with the staff, and one of them turned out to be a big fan of Bremen, which he apparently knew from social media. In the same breath, though, he told me he couldn’t go there because he had a travel ban due to “40 to 42” entries in his criminal record. I gave him an appreciative handshake. That’s quite an achievement. To top it all off, he lifted his T-shirt, revealing a pistol tucked into his trousers: a Beretta, .38 calibre, he said 🤓🤩 Needless to say, the coffee was on the house. Still, a nice guy.
In the evening, I came across a building that looked abandoned. After a while, it turned out that the owner lived next door, and after a bit of back and forth, I got permission to pitch my tent inside the unfinished building. On top of that, I was served a table full of food, Kurdish-Turkish style, which I couldn’t really turn down.
