Ride into Balfour where there's a cafe for morning coffee. Now that it's October I have no mobile data and can only connect to Internet through wifi. Open messages to find Cristina dumped me.... Can't handle the long distance relationship in short. Pretty gutted, but maybe for the best. Occupies my mind for rest of day as I ride onto Nelson on what is a busier road. Take lunch here then climb out of the town on a quieter road towards Castlegar. It's here that the kettle valley rail trail begins. Haven't looked at map or planned anything, but rain starts falling as I gradually climb. I had seen what I thought was a decent place to camp on Google satellite, but it's cleared forest and I end up following a forest road back down a short way to lake looking quickly from somewhere to camp. It's not heavy rain but I don't bother with a fire. More concerning is I only have around a litre of water, so hoping I can find some on the trail tomorrow morning as I am climbing away from the lake.
