Despite going to North Wales frequently for my entire life I had somehow never visited Swallow Falls. To make up for it I decided to go to both sides to try to catch the best views. You reach the north side by a path that runs along the river from the bridge just by the famous Ugly House, it is about a mile each way. The north side does allow you to get close to the top of the falls, but the viewpoint a bit further on is rather enclosed by trees so maybe better in the winter. On balance I would suggest the views from the south side are better and you can get close enough - so paying the £2 fee is definitely worthwhile. Even so you can only see the top and middle section of the cascade, the bottom section is not accessible.
