Rubha Hunish to The Quiraing | Skye Trail (Dog-Friendly)

Leaving the coastal headland behind, Stage 2 shifts dramatically from a brief, civilised tarmac stretch between the war memorial and the local water works straight into an unforgiving, lung-busting moorland slog. Pushing through deep heather, hidden peat hags, and water-logged tussocks at the foot of the ascent is exhausting, but hitting the ridge line delivers an instant, staggering payoff. You are met with sheer, sudden 100-meter drops, expansive views across the open Atlantic toward the Outer Hebrides, and the Trotternish spine rolling infinitely southward.

The high-level ridge walking is fast and flowing before plunging into the otherworldly, labyrinthine basalt structures of the Quiraing. Here, absolute isolation abruptly ends. The descent joins narrow, tightly winding single-track trails packed with lightly loaded day-trippers, demanding high patience and tight trail etiquette before you can break away to find a secluded high-ground camp.

Trail Dog Logistics:

Bounding Fatigue: The brutal transition from the water works to the ridge involves deep heather and wet tussocks. Medium-to-small dogs will be forced to "bound" rather than walk, which spikes their heart rate rapidly. Enforce strict micro-breaks here.

Precipice Management: The ridge reveal is spectacular but features zero barricades. Sudden, sheer drops dictate a strict hands-free bungee lead policy the moment you crest the ascent.

Crowd Control: The Quiraing is a global tourist hotspot. Navigating heavily trafficked single-track paths with a fully loaded expedition pack and a trail dog requires a short traffic-handle grip on your lead to yield safely to oncoming walkers.
