Today's ride begins by continuing on the road, mostly descending, with a few shorter, steeper but manageble climbs until Ampezzo with its impressive church. On the way there's a 2km long road tunnel - there's no alternative unfortunately, the old road is closed. There is very little traffic on the road, so the tunnel is not intimidating, but of course have your lights on.
At Ampesson stop for a capuccino and a brioche, before continuing on the FVG6 cycle route that takes you away from the main road. The beginning is a little sketchy, there's some rougher gravel a couple of sections to rejoin the road to cross the rivers, but as you continue this turns into a quality dedicated cycle path.
In Tolmezzo there's a bit of confusion with some construction, but it seems to me that they've connected the cycle path around the town a little better than before.
Afterwards is a section I call "the craziest cycle path in the world." There's a very nice and quiet road that has manageable climbs. The cycle path that runs in the trees alongside was build by someone with an electro-bike with a strong motor. If you're tired - stay on the road, otherwise there's at least one section where you'll need to get off and push.
From Cavazzo there's a very nice cycle path through the forest. Nice and cool on a hot day, this takes you round to Venzone where you rejoin the Alpe-Adria. The square of this beautiful little village is mobbed with cyclists. It's quite a shock after the last few days when the cycle paths were quiet. Get a gelato at the gelataria in the corner of the square.
The worst part of the Alpe Adria is the first few kilometers north of Venzone. You have to ride along the busy main road for a few kilometers. There are a couple of sections that run along a side road. The first takes you through a village destroyed by the earthquake and not rebuilt. The second part now nicely connects you back to a recently finished section of the cycle path that runs along the old railway. This will now take you all the way back to Austria. This new section is really nice to ride. It's an easy gradient and beautiful views as you ride up towards the mountains. There's plenty of cycling traffic coming down. Watch for the non-cyclists who sometimes don't keep to their side.
Eventually to Chiusaforte, where if you ask permission you can camp in the meadow opposite the bar in the old station. Don't expect a quiet night - it is a bar, and we are in Italy. They will also let you have a hot shower, if you put a few coins in the "pig". A great place to stop. You can have dinner beside the cycle path and reflect on the journey you've taken so far.
