Kirkwall, Hauptort der schottischen Orkney-Inseln, mit rund 7.000 Einwohnern, liegt auf der Hauptinsel Mainland. Der Name bedeutet „Kirchenbucht“ (Kirkjuvágr) und kommt aus dem Skandinavischen.
Erst 1468 wurde Kirkwall schottisch, als Jakob III. (Schottland) die Orkneys erwarb.
In Kirkwall gibt es eine der ältesten und bekanntesten Whisky-Brennereien Schottlands, die Highland Park Disteillery, die für ihren torfig-guten Single Malt berühmt ist.
