Arriving in the afternoon on the train in Villach we take a shortish ride to our campsite for the first night. This first 30km breaks up the rest of the tour into manageable sections.
Villach is an very well equipped station. After taking your bike and luggage from the train, there's a lift down to the tunnel and another to take you to the street in front of the station. There's a supermarket and a few coffee places, and a bank with an ATM in case you need cash.
Villach is super-cycle friendly, so from the station you ride directly down to the river to join the Alpe-Adria. Late in the afternoon there are a lot of cyclists doing the Alpe-Adria coming the opposite way down the hill. You will get some admiring or "whose that crazy guy" looks as you peddle up the gentle gradient in the opposite direction.
Here the Alpe-Adria is mostly smooth gravel with lots of water fountains to fill up your water bottle.
There aren't too many campsites in this area, and to get to this one you have to flirt with a busy road for a short section. The campsite is basic, but has everything you need.
