Classic Norwegian mountain route: the T-marked crossing from Finse (1,222 m) north into Skarvheimen, and the opening stage of the hut-to-hut line that continues to Aurlandsdalen.
From the station the trail crosses the railway and climbs into open high fjell, passes the self-service hut Klemsbu (1,366 m) roughly midway, and then loses height steadily towards Geiterygghytta (1,224 m), a staffed DNT lodge open from late June to mid-September. Nothing technical, but no shelter either: it is exposed the whole way, snowfields hold late into the summer, and in low cloud you navigate cairn to cairn.
I have done it a couple of times. This time fast hiking / trail running with a light day pack.
Logistics: park the car at the end point at Geiteryggen, bus to Ål, train to Finse, then run the route back to the car. Works in the summer season only — outside it the bus departures thin out and eventually stop.
Weather was not great: fog and drizzle for the first half, overcast on the second.
