The first stage of the Pohorje-Kozjak Trail begins in Spodnje Radvanje, at the roundabout on Streliška cesta, where the road leads towards Pot na Okope. From here, the trail gradually leaves the urban outskirts of Maribor and starts climbing towards Pohorje.
The route first passes through Poštela and continues towards the Pohorje ski slopes, following the tourist slope above Koča Luka. From there, it climbs along the ski slope all the way to Bellevue, the upper station of the Pohorje Cable Car.
If you want to skip the initial climb, you can take the Pohorje Cable Car from Zgornje Radvanje to Bellevue. This leaves out the first part of the trail and effectively reduces the stage to the section from Bellevue to Mariborska koča.
From Bellevue, the trail passes the Church of St. Bolfenk and continues towards the Maribor viewpoint (Mariborski razglednik). After the viewpoint, the route follows the Pohorje ridge through the forest, with the trail gradually becoming more secluded and peaceful. Eventually, you reach the turn-off towards Mariborska koča.
The final section passes through a small settlement of holiday homes. From here, it is only a few minutes to Mariborska koča, where the first stage of the Pohorje-Kozjak Trail ends.
The trailhead is easily accessible by public transport from central Maribor. Local bus lines G6 and P11 serve the area, with several stops within walking distance of the starting point. Alternatively, you can reach the trailhead using Maribor's MBajk public bicycle-sharing system, with several stations in the surrounding area.
