Saintes zählt zu den ältesten Städten Frankreichs und war schon vor über 2.000 Jahren eine bedeutende römische Stadt. Besonders beeindruckend ist der gut erhaltene Amphithéâtre de Saintes, in dem einst bis zu 15.000 Zuschauer Gladiatorenkämpfe und andere Veranstaltungen verfolgten. Die Stadt liegt malerisch an der Charente und verbindet römische Geschichte mit mittelalterlichem Charme. Ein Wahrzeichen ist außerdem der Arc de Germanicus – ein fast 2.000 Jahre alter Triumphbogen, der heute noch an die glanzvolle Vergangenheit der Stadt erinnert.
