Day 1: Kolari to Aalistunturi

The route leaves Kolari and pretty quickly settles into the River Tornio valley. The river runs along the Finland–Sweden border, and the road just follows it south on quiet paved roads for the first stretch.
After about 30 kilometres, Lappean Loma is the last easy stop — good place for a coffee and a doughnut before the route turns into longer gravel sections and things get more remote. From here it’s mostly rolling gravel and not much else, just distance slowly stacking up.
Eventually you reach the base of Aalistunturi. From there it’s a 2 km hike-a-bike up to the old Fire Warden’s Hut. It’s a bit of work at the end of the day, but it feels like a fitting way to get there.
The hut sits on top of the fell, open and exposed, looking out over the forests and lakes of southern Kolari. It’s a simple day shelter, but one night is generally fine if you’re respectful and don’t leave it crowded for others.
There’s no water at the top, so refill from roadside streams before the climb. There’s also a dry toilet at the hut.
