This 10.2-mile loop offers a fascinating mix of Hampshire’s military history and its serene natural landscapes. Starting from the Gibraltar Barracks, you traveled through the heart of the Minley training area, characterized by wide gravel tracks and dense pine forests. The standout feature of the northern half is Minley Pond, a peaceful woodland oasis surrounded by towering Douglas firs and sequoias. This section provides a quiet, "off-the-beaten-path" atmosphere, occasionally punctuated by the distant sound of light aircraft operating out of the nearby Blackbushe Airport.
As you moved south towards Fleet, the terrain remained remarkably level, crossing over the M3 corridor into more varied scenery. You likely encountered the fringes of local heathlands and perhaps caught glimpses of the historic Basingstoke Canal area before the route curved back north. The return leg provides a gentle, steady incline through open MOD lands, offering a sense of scale as you transition from the suburban edges of town back into the rugged, utilitarian beauty of the military estate. It’s a route that perfectly balances the utilitarian grit of the army training grounds with the classic, lush greenery of the English countryside.
