Experience the raw power and geological wonders of East Iceland with this stunning loop hike. This trail takes you to two of the most iconic waterfalls in the country, each offering a unique visual spectacle.
The journey begins with the ascent toward Litlanesfoss. This waterfall is framed by some of the most spectacular basalt columns in Iceland—towering, geometric pillars that look almost handcrafted. As you continue upward, the landscape opens up to reveal the mighty Hengifoss, one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland (128 meters). What makes Hengifoss truly unique are the striking horizontal red clay layers sandwiched between basaltic strata, creating a vivid "zebra stripe" effect on the canyon walls.
The trail is well-marked but involves a steady incline on the way up. The descent offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Lagarfljót and the surrounding valley.
• Highlights: Basalt columns, volcanic red-clay layers, and wide-open valley views.
• Terrain: Gravel paths, rocky sections, and some moderate inclines.
• Pro Tip: Even in spring or summer, patches of snow can remain near the falls (as seen in the photos), so sturdy hiking boots are a must!
