💚 Back to my favorite playground in the mountains above Mijas — and honestly, this route just moved to #1 on my list.
I’ve explored quite a few trails here in the Sierra de Mijas, but this one hits the perfect balance:
a proper steep climb that burns your legs 🔥 and a smooth asphalt descent that’s much kinder on your knees. Perfect combo if you train smart, not just hard.
This area is geologically fascinating. These mountains are part of the Betic Cordillera, formed millions of years ago during the collision between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. The rocks you see here are mostly limestone and dolomite, which explains these crazy textures.
The “holey”, sculpted surfaces you see on the rocks (like in my photo) are the result of karst erosion — basically, slightly acidic rainwater slowly dissolving the stone over thousands (and millions) of years. Wind, temperature changes, and water runoff shaped them into these sharp, almost alien-looking formations.
Wildlife is very much alive here too. On my last climb I saw a lot of animal traces right on the trail. Most of it likely belongs to the Common genet — a small, very elegant wild animal, somewhere between a cat and a marten. They’re nocturnal, so you rarely see them… but they’re definitely watching you 👀
One of the most surreal moments on this route is when the clouds drop low and you literally move inside them. The sound changes, everything becomes softer, and your sense of space shifts completely. It’s quiet, a bit mystical — and honestly, addictive.
Why I love this route:
– Great for athletic training (can be hiked or fully run depending on your level)
– Leg workout on the climb
– Knee-friendly descent
– The Views
Tips before you go:
– Always check weather + wind conditions
– Bring enough water (no shade in some sections)
– Don’t forget sunscreen
– Take a light snack (apple + protein bar = perfect)
– Wear layered sports clothing — it can be hot in open areas and surprisingly cool in the forest or clouds.
This route can be a walk or a serious run. Totally depends on your level.
If you’re into real training + wild nature + a bit of magic in the air — this one is worth it☺️
