A quiet loop to Place Fell from the secluded Martindale valley, returning via Boredale Head.
After a short section of road, the ascent is grassy and fairly steep to the summit. From the Place Fell summit cairn, a gravel path leads down towards the valley, with Angle Tarn opening up ahead. A short grassy descent takes you onto the easy-to-follow gravel track all the way back to the road leading to Martindale.
On a good day, the natural extension is to continue on to Angletarn Pikes and Beda Fell (instead of dropping down into the valley), for a neat horseshoe covering 3 Wainwrights. For a much longer day, it’s possible to also include The Nab and Rest Dodd.
Wainwrights covered:
• Place Fell (657m)
Good for: A shorter hike or an escape route from the full loop if the weather turns bad.
Terrain: Grassy on ascent; clear gravel track on descent; short road section to finish. Some boggy sections on the upper ridge.
Parking: Roadside near Martindale Church
