Waypoints

A

The Moffat Ram

Highlight • Settlement

The Moffat Ram marks the start point of the magnificent Annandale Way and is a conspicuous sight on Moffat's Main Street. The bronze figure, oddly earless, was comissioned in 1875 and nods to Moffat's proud traditions of sheep farming and wool trading. The legend goes that sculptor William Brodie hung himself after the unveiling when locals recoiled in horror, proclaiming "it has nae lugs!" The legend has no factual grounds; Brodie died six years later in Edinburgh.

View of the Devil's Beef Tub

Highlight • Natural Monument

A dramatic, massive and steep-sided hollow ringed by four hills, The Devil's Beef Tub is a must for hikers exploring the Moffat Hills. Just like Glencoe's Lost Valley, it was a handy place to hide cattle. The Johnstone reivers – known as the 'devils' – did just that, leading to this landmarks eyebrow raising name. In 1685, escapee Covenater John Hunter tried to outwit pursuing dragoons but was shot dead. His monument adorns the viewpoint.

Annanhead Hill Summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

Panoramic views await as you stride out across the high ground above the steep sided hollow of the Devil's Beef Tub. A cairn marks the summit of Annanhead Hill at 1,568 feet (478 m) and from here the vista is splendid. Further to the east is a cairn marking the source of the River Annan.

Moffat Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Moffat is a wonderful base for all manner of adventures in the Southern Uplands. Where hillwalking is concerned, the nearby Moffat Hills are one of the nation's best kept secrets, with silent summits, stunning waterfalls and scenic grandeur. The historic market town is full of quirks, from Britain's narrowest hotel and street to Scotland's oldest pharmacy. It proudly boasts a couple of firsts: the UK's first 'Dark Sky' town and Scotland's first Walkers Welcome town.
