Watzmann! There have been countless stories and legends about this mountain for centuries.
Hermann Buhl an Austrian mountaineer first climbed Watzmann as part of his training and preparation for the first ascent of the 8.125 m high Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas.
Following the spirit of classic peak alpinism, I chose to climb it despite adverse weather conditions, seeing the hike as a deliberate test of focus, resilience, and grit ahead of my looming CVPR conference deadline. The following route includes some exposed sections rated UIAA grade I–II, meaning there’s scrambling and moderate climbing along some deadly exposed ridges.
Note: The trail include few section that can be classified as T5 “Highly dangerous”, so not recommended for beginners or people without proper gears.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Königssee ➝ Watzmannhaus
⛰ Elevation Gain: 1300m
⏱ Hiking Time: ~4 hrs
Day 2: Watzmannhaus ➝ Watzmann Mittelspitze (2713m) ➝ Descent to Königssee
⏱ Hiking Time: ~9 hrs total (Including Descent)
🌡 Weather: Temperatures below freezing -1° to -7°C, Foggy in the morning with rainy and icy slippery trails.
Total Elevation: ~2100m - Ascent,. ~2000m - Descent
Overall, a true alpine mountaineering experience with adrenaline-fueled via ferrata sections on exposed ridges.
Note: The timing and the elevation gain listed by komoot are not accurate due to bad gps device.
~ I guess attitude can really beat skills; aka, we can teach people skills but not attitude.
