The day started with a problem. While we were packing, a gust of wind knocked over my bike, breaking the derailleur hanger. I was left without gears! Luckily, Denis managed to rig a direct connection between the front and rear cogs by shortening the chain. When we reached Kenmare, we tried to catch a bus to Killarney, but the buses on that route didn’t have racks suitable for carrying our bikes. So, I had to ride the remaining 40 kilometers on a single-speed setup. The lack of gears was especially painful on the climb up Moll’s Gap. My mood dropped — the chances of fixing the bike there seemed close to zero.
The weather only made things worse — it rained for hours, the wind grew stronger with elevation, and on the climb there was nowhere to hide from the storm. By the time we reached Killarney, we were soaked through and frozen. Giving up on camping in the tent and booking an Airbnb instead (a day before we started the tour) turned out to be the best decision. Our warm, dry room felt like heaven — the only thing missing was a glass of whiskey...
