Echizen Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The climb from Koguchi to the highest point of the pass is over 800 meters in altitude. For hundreds of years, pilgrims have struggled up here to get to the Nachi Taisha temple complex. On the sign at the top of the pass is the following sentence by the poet Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241), who also made a pilgrimage here: “This path is hard and strenuous; It’s hard to describe how strenuous the climb actually is.”

Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine

Highlight • Religious Site

Below the Nachi Falls, the largest waterfall in Japan, awaits you the destination of your pilgrimage. Over the centuries, a huge complex has been created here that includes both Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. The famous pagoda in front of the waterfall can even be climbed. From their circulating outlets you can enjoy an incredible panorama of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Below the temple complex you will also find hotels, restaurants and small shops.
