The Old Granary, Wells-next-the-Sea

One reason why [WNTS] has preserved its character is that it was until recent times a manufacturing town, once supplying huge quantities of malt to the Dutch and then latterly to London breweries.

It was, in the eighteenth century, nationally important as a producer of malt. The iconic maltings and granaries, now turned to new uses make its working quay a fascinating place to visit.

An impressive feature of the harbour is the large granary building with its distinctive overhanging gantry. Built in 1903, the granary has now been turned into luxury flats with magnificent views of the harbour.

Blakeney Harbour

A pretty village on the edge of the Norfolk Coast, Blakeney is well worth a visit. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the village was a commercial seaport. Nowadays the former harbour is used as a nature reserve where you can see one of the biggest seal populations in the UK. Blakeney has not always been the calm village it is today: from the 12th century, the village was known for pirates. Locals would often steal the cargo of foreign merchant ships who docked at the port. The villagers were so lawless that they even refused to give a ship to the battle against the Spanish Armada!

Today, you will find a relaxing tourist resort with hotels, pubs, great restaurants and various coastal activities.

This 18th-century windmill stands on the Norfolk coastline and is treasured in the county, serving as an icon and landmark. A five-storey tower mill with beautiful white sails, the mill is now a hotel with a variety of rooms, some with exceptional views.
