View of the Wien River

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Hackinger Steg, you'll have a striking view of the Wien River, winding picturesquely through the green valley. Surrounded by dense vegetation and the gentle murmur of the water, this spot feels like a tranquil oasis in the middle of an urban setting. The view is particularly striking at sunset – the warm light bathes the riverbanks in golden tones, while the city skyline looms in the background. It's an ideal spot for a short rest, a moment of reflection, or simply to enjoy the contrast between nature and the city.

The Nikolaitor is a popular entrance to the Lainz Tiergarten and is just a few minutes' walk from the Hütteldorf U4 station. From here, access opens to a vast natural paradise with ancient forests, rolling meadows, and a diverse range of wildlife. The approximately one-hour nature trail, which leads past the historic St. Nicholas Chapel and the idyllic Grünauer Pond, is particularly worthwhile. Families, walkers, and nature lovers will find an ideal combination of relaxation, education, and exercise here – in the heart of the Vienna Woods, yet close to the city.

Information Boards at Nikolaitor

Highlight • Rest Area

The information panels at the Nikolaitor Gate in the Lainzer Tiergarten offer visitors valuable information about the history, flora, and fauna of the protected area. They vividly explain the significance of the Tiergarten as a nature reserve and provide tips on hiking trails and important sights. The panels thus assist with orientation and invite visitors to discover and understand nature more consciously.

Heurigen Tavern Zur Wildsau

Highlight • Restaurant

The "Wildsau" can look back on a long tradition. The popular restaurant is now run by the Krommer family.

The "Wildsau" became known not only through a few scenes in "Kaisermühlenblues", but also through its own TV series, "Mozart and Meisel". This series was about two pub owners (played by Götz Kauffmann and Andreas Vitásek) and the pub that served as the backdrop was this same "wild boar".

Whether regular guests, walkers or cyclists: the large guest garden of the Heurigenschenke offers visitors a unique view over Vienna. If visibility is particularly good, you can even see the Ötscher.

The self-service bar is legendary, inside there is a Heurigen buffet where everything is homemade. "Especially the hearty cuisine is very popular with our guests," says Grete Krommer, who has been running the "Wildsau" together with her husband Martin since May 1, 1985 and is responsible for the culinary specialties.

"We don't just have normal operations," says the master of the house, "we also offer our visitors the opportunity to rent the Wildsau for weddings, christenings and birthday parties, but also for special company events." Guests are given special consideration, one takes the Krommers at their word.

The "Wildsau" also organizes its own festivals: the Oktoberfest should be mentioned here, as well as the Harvest Festival or Halloween night in autumn.

Unfortunately, the "Wildsau" is closed in the winter season, but can be rented for private events.
