Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Amandus Church Spiere

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the parish church of Spiere remains shrouded in mystery. It was probably built around 840 on a small artificial hill in the Scheldt Valley. However, the first official reports date back to the 11th century. An inscription on the northern tower gable indicates that it was constructed in 1524. Because of its strategic location at the foot of the "Vlakte van Spiere" (the flat fields bordering the Scheldt River, particularly suitable for setting up army camps) and completely surrounded by the Tournai region, the church was often the scene of fierce fighting and fell victim to looting and destruction.
In 1891, the church, with the exception of the tower, was rebuilt once more. During the retreat of the German army, a few days before the armistice of November 1918, the building was irreparably damaged. Between 1920 and 1925, the current St. Amand's Church was built on the foundations of the 19th-century oratory, with some modifications. The wooden ceiling was replaced with a brick one, and the staircase to the tower was relocated.

Between 2019 and 2021, the church was thoroughly renovated. The roof was retiled with new slates, walkways were installed for more efficient maintenance, and the copper drains and cornices were replaced. The tower and clocks were also refurbished. The crumbling stones were individually recreated in the stonemason's workshop and replaced.

The Old Swimming Pool of Spiere-Helkijn was an open-air swimming pool located at the mouth of the Spierebeek in the Scheldt. The swimming pool was built in the former water purification testing station that was built by the Belgian government in 1935-1936. The swimming pool was closed in 1955 and later became a protected monument. In 2019, the intermunicipal company Leiedal bought the old swimming pool of Spiere-Helkijn. Leiedal wants to preserve the site as heritage and improve accessibility by realizing a meaningful use with respect for the heritage and the green environment on the banks of the Scheldt. Through the PDPO project “Environmental construction of the Old Swimming Pool Spiere as a tourist-recreational hotspot on the Scheldt”, with support from the European Rural Program, Leiedal wishes to design the swimming pool and surroundings as a public space that is attractive, accessible, usable and safe for all visitors. In 2024, the greening will put the icing on the cake to deliver the new site that same year. The Old Swimming Pool will be restored as a heritage location into a tourist-recreational hotspot on the Scheldt where you can take a unique dip in nature.

St. John the Baptist Church Helkijn

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Jan Baptist Church is the parish church of Helkijn, a sub-municipality of Spiere-Helkijn in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The church is located on Gemeenteplein and has a rich history. According to some, there was a small church in Helkijn as early as 650, which was founded by Saint Eligius. The first written indication of a church in Helkijn dates from 988. The right of patronage belongs to the Saint Martin's Abbey of Tournai and the church is owned by the Bishop of Tournai, as is the village lordship. A Romanesque church was built around 1200 and was enlarged in the 17th century. A three-sided choir was added. In 1686 a sacristy was built against the choir on the south side. However, on September 8, 1686, the church was destroyed by fire.

Old Pumping Station Bossuit

Highlight • Monument

The Old Pump Building of Bossuit (Avelgem) dates from 1860 and is located in Avelgem. The building was originally responsible for pumping water from the Scheldt to the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal, which was to serve as a water transport route from Wallonia to Flanders and Northern France. The building has now been renovated and has been given a new tourist-recreational destination. It is now home to Spirits by Design, a craft distillery that has moved there. It is still possible to visit the old pumps freely during the weekdays. In the summer months there is an aperitif bar De stokerie.

Kortrijk–Bossuit Canal

Highlight • River

Due to a breach in the wall near Ellestraat (approximately halfway along the canal), the canal completely emptied in 1959. The damage was later linked to the digging work of muskrats.
