Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Flat, quiet roads that are a pleasure to cycle on. It can be windy, but the wildlife and the views are totally worth it. If you have time to stop at the modern visitors center then I'd highly recommend it.

Yes, in the Rye Harbor Nuture Reserve there are always fantastic views into the distance, whether over the North Sea, over to Dungeness or Fairlight, over the lakes of the gravel quarry or to Rye.

Red-Roofed Hut, Rye Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Red Hut is a landmark near the mouth of the River Rother on the Rye Harbour and nature reserve side. It has featured in many paintings and photographs over the years. It was first built in the early 1900s and was used to store fishing and shrimping equipment. It was also known as Gran’s Hut by the grandchildren of the woman who owned it.

You have lovely views across to Camber Sands from here. Camber Sands is a popular beach with great sand dunes to explore, but it is obviously on the other side of the Rother River if you want to get there. There is a parking area here too, so you can walk to the headland to have a look out over Rye Bay, walk on the shingle beach when the tide is out, or explore some of the old pillbox fortifications in the area.

Rye Harbour Beach

Highlight • Natural

The beach at Rye Harbor offers distant views as far as Dungeness Nuclear Power Station and Fairlight. The rolling pebbles make a typical clicking noise at high tide, and at low tide you can walk far out on the sandbanks. Birds can always be observed. Rye Harbor Nature Reserve begins just behind the beach.

Rye Harbour shingle habitat

Highlight • Natural

Shingle habitat is a rare and specialized type of coastal environment, made up of pebbles and stones that support a variety of plant and animal life. Rye Harbour is one of the largest and most diverse shingle habitats in southern England, with over 1000 hectares of shingle, saltmarsh, lagoons and grazing marsh. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) that attracts many birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Some of the plants that grow on shingle are Sea-kale, Sea Pea, Sea Campion and Stonecrops. They have adapted to cope with the harsh conditions of salt spray, high winds, unstable substrate and nutrient-poor soil. They also help to stabilize the shingle and create soil for other plants to colonize.
