Fort Wędrowiec and View of Żywiec Lake

Highlight • Historical Site

Driveway in Węgierska Górka by a picturesque narrow asphalt road winding in fields and meadows. Particularly attractive is part of the route from the Żabnica valley, where there are practically no buildings and the asphalt is of very good quality. You can enter it from Żabnica and exit to Żabnica. At the highest point are the remains of the "Wędrowiec" fort from World War II. With good visibility, the Żywickie Lake, emerging in the distance from among the mountains, also looks beautiful. Because the road is narrow, watch out for oncoming cars, which are few, but sometimes they do happen.

In connection with the expected war in the spring of 1939, the construction of a fortification system to protect the Sola valley began.

Wędrowiec Combat Bunker

Highlight • Historical Site

"Wędrowiec" is a heavy combat bunker with resistance "C". It was armed with one fortress anti-tank gun "Bofors" and three heavy machine guns "Browning". No armored combat dome for the heavy machine gun was installed, but sandbags were placed around the dome shaft. The facility has 2 spare exits, 2 illuminating rocket launchers, hand grenade drop-off point, small arms shooting range and an optical communication station. Ventilation equipment, power generator, and headlights were not installed. The crew consisted of 4 non-commissioned officers and 14 privates, the commander was Cpt. Tadeusz Semik.

Currently, the "Wędrowiec" bunker serves as a museum devoted to the local fortifications from 1939 and the military activities that took place in the first days of World War II in the Węgierska Górka commune. There is an exhibition in the shelter, including photographs of soldiers fighting for Węgierska Górka, souvenirs related to the bunker commander - Capt. Tadeusz Semik, the typical equipment of an officer and non-commissioned officer, medical tools and materials used at the time, communication equipment, as well as weapons and equipment of soldiers of both fighting sides, e.g. rifles, helmets, gas masks, canteens, hand grenades and uniforms. Another attraction are the cannons and small post-German shelters from the time of the occupation, located in the vicinity of the "Wędrowiec".
