Mulhacén Summit

Highlight • Summit

Among the legends that surround the Sierra Nevada mountains, the story of King Muley Hassem, father of the famous Boabdil, the last monarch of Granda who surrendered the city to the Catholic Monarchs, stands out. The chronicles say that Muley Hassem met a beautiful 12-year-old Christian named Isabel de Solís among the slaves in the entourage of his wife, the sultana Aixa, and fell passionately in love. The Arab converted the young woman to Islam and declared her a favorite of his harem with the name Zoraya, morning star.

The romance was not admitted by the jealous wife who dedicated herself to raising the Saracen court against her husband, giving rise to continuous confrontations and dramatic events that ended in a bloody civil war. Muley Hassem had to flee Granada and died shortly after in the fortress of Mondújar, accompanied by his beloved and a small group of faithful followers who helped Zoraya bury the unfortunate king on the summit of the highest peak of the mountain range and of all the peninsular geographies. Since then, the geological king of Sierra Nevada has been named after the Nasrid king who renounced his kingdom for love.

Mulhacén Summit

Highlight • Summit

After a long walk, we reached the destination point: the summit of Mulhacén (3479 meters), the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula. They say that if the day is very clear, you can see even the mountains of Africa. We were not lucky that day, but what we did see were the impressive peaks that are hidden in the Sierra Nevada.

Refugio Poqueira

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Maintained hut and perfect overnight spot for a multi-day tour over the Sierra Nevada. Attention: Food is available punctually at 8 p.m. (sometimes earlier in the darker season), and the hut can be booked out quickly in the summer months. In autumn or spring, however, it is rather tranquil. Tip: To be on the safe side, ask the Sierra Nevada Info-Line about the current opening times before the tour. You can find the telephone number here: granadadirect.com/provincia/telefonos-sierra-nevada
