Einsiedeleiweg

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Einsiedeleiweg is a small, somewhat hidden hiking trail that connects Semmering village with the train station. Away from the main paths, it leads through quiet forest passages and offers an idyllic alternative to the direct route into town.

Hotel Panhans, Semmering

Highlight • Historical Site

The hotel was opened by Vinzenz Panhans in 1888 and had 44 rooms at the time. Panhans had previously been head chef at the Südbahnhotel, which had existed since 1882 - a grand hotel in the immediate vicinity of the Panhans. The first extensions were made in 1891 and 1904. After Vinzenz Panhans passed away, his nephew Franz Panhans took over the hotel. Franz Panhans undertook the expansion to a large hotel with 400 rooms. After the death of the 44-year-old entrepreneur, his widow Clara continued to run the business until 1918. After its expansion in 1912/13, it was temporarily one of the largest hotels in Europe.
In 1918, Clara Panhans sold the house to the Österreichische Commerzialbank, and a period of unrest and multiple speculative changes of ownership followed. In 1930, the Estonian hotel and casino entrepreneur William D. Zimdin took over the hotel. In 1932 he had the legendary Alpenstrandbad Semmering built by the architects Anton Liebe and Ludwig Stigler, a free-standing indoor pool with sliding glass walls. During the Nazi regime, it was available to the Nazi grandees as the Gauhotel Semmering. In 1945 it was taken over by NEWAG and in 1949 the main building was reopened under the auspices of the Austrian Tourist Office. However, the once noble Semmering region experienced a long period of decline due to its belonging to the Soviet occupation zone (until 1955). The Panhans was able to survive until 1969 and then it was closed.

In 1978, the Viennese building contractor Adalbert Kallinger took over the property and started a revitalization project together with the municipality of Semmering and the state of Lower Austria. A large number of former rooms have been preserved. In 1983 the actual original building was demolished and the remaining part from the joint building – the former jacuzzi – was supplemented with a new building to give it its present form.
The hotel business takes place mainly in this new extension and only in a part of the historic main building. The ambience of the traditional house was linked to the fact that the choice of interior was based on a kind of neo-art nouveau, which largely runs through the publicly accessible rooms.

Right next to Semmering train station, a monument commemorates Carl Ritter von Ghega, the driving force behind the Semmering Railway. Nestled between the tracks, the mountains, and the unique atmosphere of the station, one can sense how closely technology and landscape are intertwined. A brief stop is worthwhile – for a photo and a moment to absorb the history of this place.
