The ix Xlendi tower is the oldest freestanding coastal watchtower on Gozo. It was built during the reign of Grand Master Lascaris in 1650. It was destined to defend ix Xlendi Bay and keep smugglers, pirates, and quarantine fugitives out (the Knights Templar were well-versed in medicine and had strict quarantine rules for ships coming from diseased regions). The tower has a square layout with ten meters of side and a height of 30 meters. It has an architecturally unique platform that sticks out to the sea.

The tower was armed with two iron 6-pounder cannons, which were later replaced by two 4-pounders. The tower had its own Capo Mastro (unit commander) and gunner (Sagittarius), who in turn had his own adjutant. At night the tower was guarded by three other armed men. From the steep cliffs of Ras il-Bajda, the tower has sweeping views across the southwestern sea routes to Gozo and the inlet of the Comino Canal. The ix-Xlendi tower served until 1871 as a guardian of the bay.

A very beautiful tour with a view of the mighty cliffs (Sanap Cliffs).

However, there are also shadows where there is a lot of light. On the way down towards the tower you pass a lot of private properties. The birdsong was noticeable. However, they are not free birds, but birds locked in small cages, which are used as decoys …
