Lüttenheide Adventure Trail with Stream

Highlight • Trail

It's a bit adventurous to walk here. Small, narrow path that seems to have been somewhat forgotten, overgrown as it appears, one can assume that no one has walked here for a long time. Nevertheless, for sure-footed hikers with suitable shoes (which can sometimes get wet and dirty), the narrow path is always clearly recognizable. And with the navigation from and with Komoot, getting lost is not an issue anyway. ☺

Dicke Berta Oak

Highlight • Natural Monument

Who needs the mammoth trees in the USA / Canada? The thickness Bertha is about 700 years old and has a diameter of about 6 meters. There are still flowy trails.

The name is reminiscent of its dark past: here, in times of witch-hunts, innocent women and men allegedly brought to witchcraft have been drowned. Today, the witch pond is a popular destination and impresses with its beautiful location and atmosphere. In a small bay that flows into a rock valley lives even a turtle population.
Around the witch's pond are tree sculptures, which look at first distant look like Indian pylons. In fact, they are miraculous sculptures by the Serbian artist Mile Prerad.
Directly on the shore is a very large and fully covered barbecue hut (for up to 60 people), which can be rented on Tel: 02373 - 903202.

April 26, 2025,Dicke Berta – Hexenteich Runde von Menden (Sauerland)
We had our sights set on the Witches' Pond again. For once, I managed to take photos of the sculptures by the pond in daylight. We continued on to Fat Berta, a statue with a seating area. The hike led us along beautiful paths and through magnificent beech forests. Once back in Menden, we stopped at an ice cream parlor …

We visited fat Berta for the last time in July 2021 and have chosen her again as our hiking destination today. The hiking trail to Berta was, as always, very beautiful. Past the old forester's lodge, with a lovingly planted front garden. Back over the witch pond with its wooden sculptures and finally, the Rodenberg castle ruins. Spring is also …
