Fairies Chapel

Highlight • Natural Monument

This gorge is known as “The Thrutch” and folklore says the chapel was formed when the King of the Fairies, aiding Robert of Huntingdon to overcome a curse, turned a local coven of witches to stone.

Fairy Bridge and Waterfall, Healey Dell Nature Reserve

There was once two bridges, but a recent river swell swept it away. You can also see an hidden waterfall to the right of the bridge if you walk a few yards further.

Built in 1867 for the Rochdale to Bacup railway line, Healey Dell Viaduct is a wonderful structure. Each of its eight arches has a 26-foot (7.9 m) span and it towers to 103 feet (31.3 m) above the valley.

The last time a passenger train chugged across it was in 1949 and freight trains continued until the 1960s. Today the National Cycle Network makes good use of it.

The access road to the nature reserve (Dell Road) from Shawclough Road (Healey Hotel) is closed due to subsidence. You can park part way down this road and access the reserve on foot, which is a 10 minute walk.

Lovely walk in the Nature reserve. Plenty to see but there are some steep bits to climb. Also, a nice tea room to stop off at which was a Railway station in years gone by.
