Hall & Woodhouse Brewery

Highlight • Pub

Founded in 1777, this brewery produces Badger Beer. Still family-owned, this brewery is a popular stop for locals and visitors; you can take tours, visit the shop or simply pause and have a drink at the bar.

The brewery's history is a fascinating one; during the Napoleonic wars, the founder Charles Hall, won the contract to supply local soldiers with the government beer allowance of five pints a day (!).

Fursty Ferret and Tanglefoot are two other names produced here that have earned a reputation nationwide.

Former Somerset & Dorset Railway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The stretch of the old Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) line at Spetisbury and Blandford area provides a tangible connection to the past and is a key part of the modern landscape. This crucial cross-country route connected the English Channel at Poole/Bournemouth with the Bristol Channel and Bath, allowing direct passenger and freight services from the Midlands and the North to the South Coast.

Track Doubling: While initially a single track, the line at Spetisbury was upgraded to double track around 1901. This required the construction of the second platform (the 'Up' platform) and a signal box to manage the crossover points.

Down Line: Trains travelling towards Bailey Gate, Wimborne, and Bournemouth used the Down platform (the original platform).

Up Line: Trains travelling towards Blandford, Templecombe, and Bath (Green Park) used the Up platform (the new platform).

The Scenery: The line through Spetisbury was known for its gentler curves and gradients compared to the difficult northern section over the Mendip Hills, allowing for fast running. It offered picturesque views over the River Stour Valley, which you can still enjoy today.

Closure: The tracks at Spetisbury saw their final passenger services (the main S&D line closure) in March 1966. The rails were lifted a few years later in 1970.

This is one of the Iron Age hillforts that lie in a chain from Hambledon Hill to Hengistbury Head. The earthworks here are clear and well-defined, making it fun to ramble about. It has only one rampart, which clouds its history and its construction may have been interrupted by the Romans.

Hiking up to the trig point offers lovely views of the patchwork landscapes around this part of Dorset.

Crawford Bridge over the River Stour

Highlight • Historical Site

Of medieval origin but widened in the 1800s, this stone bridge spans the River Stour at Spetisbury and is a lovely place to pause (in one of the cut-waters) and admire the river as it ambles south.

The upstream side of the bridge is the older, perhaps 15th century, but significantly harder to get a good view of due to private land preventing access. Nonetheless, the bridge is magnificent however you look at it. It's named 'Crawford' as it takes the road to Tarrant Crawford, a little to the north.

Keyneston Mill Botanical Gardens

Highlight • Rest Area

With 50 acres of grounds (20 ha), Keyneston Mill is home to the biggest private botanical garden in England. Owned by Parterre Fragrances, the rare plants grown here are harvested for their fragrances and made into experimental perfumes.

Stroll through the stunning gardens or try your hand at making scents with their perfume workshops.

The main landmark of the centre of Blandford Forum. A quite impressive church which was unfortunately covered in scaffolding but still showed signs of its beauty.
