Description
The Weir Hill loop from North Andover is one of those local gems that delivers a lot of variety for minimal effort. This easy 4.5-mile (7.3 km) hiking route, with 363 feet (111 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in just under 2 hours. It's a perfect choice if you're looking for a rewarding outing with diverse scenery and a touch of history, without committing to a full-day trek.
What to expect on Weir Hill loop from North Andover
As you explore the Weir Hill loop, you'll journey through a patchwork of landscapes. The trail system, set on a "double-drumlin," means you'll experience both hilly sections and picturesque stretches along Lake Cochichewick. You can follow the yellow-blazed path for wide-open lake views, complete with boardwalks, and even pass through a stone railroad tunnel. Alternatively, the blue trail leads you to the top of Weir Hill, offering expansive panoramas of the Merrimack Valley and, on clear days, distant peaks like Mount Monadnock. While the overall difficulty is easy, be prepared for some moderate ascents, especially if you opt for the blue or red trails, which provide a good cardio workout.
Planning your visit
Weir Hill is managed by The Trustees of Reservations and is open daily from dawn to dusk, making it accessible for early morning or late afternoon hikes. Leashed dogs are generally welcome on the trails, but remember that Lake Cochichewick is a public drinking water supply, so swimming, wading, and dog access to the water are strictly prohibited. There are no permits or fees required for hiking here, and while specific parking details aren't provided, a trailhead parking area is typically available.
