Limes Saxoniae at Hornbeker Mühlenbach

Highlight • Historical Site

A memorial stone reminds us that the Limes Saxoniae ran here.
The settlement area of the ethnic groups was marked by borders at least since the early 9th century.
In the north it was the Danewerk. It separated the area of the Danes from that of the Saxons.
The eastern border between the sphere of influence of the Saxons and the Slavic areas of Wagria and Polabia, which had been settled by Abodrites since the 7th century, was the so-called "Limes Saxoniae". It was built after the Franks advanced into Saxon territory in 810 to protect against the Slavs.
It followed natural features such as rivers and swampy lowlands and
was partly secured by castles.

According to a chronicle written around 1070 by the historian Adam of Bremen,
the course can be assumed. The border line then started at Boizenburg on the Elbe in the south, followed the Delvenau, then the Trave and finally the Schwentine, which flows into the Kiel Fjord.

Near the Limes Saxoniae and the bridge over the Hornbeker Mühlenbach is this rest area with shelter. If you are surprised by the bad weather, you will find protection here.

Even if you are not a train fanatic, you still stand in amazement and admire the hilarious hodgepodge of souvenirs distributed on the beautifully situated property. The rustic house and the outbuildings also have something special.
Great, that puts a smile on your face and makes you happy

This small memorial stone stands under a still young fir tree, opposite the signpost on the Old Road to Güster, and reminds us of the former course of the Limes Saxoniae. The Limes Saxoniae, also known as the Saxon Wall, is a border strip built by the Saxons around 810 AD to protect them from the Slavic Abodrites in eastern Schleswig-Holstein. The fortification of the border area was probably agreed by Charlemagne in 810/11 during his last stay in northern Germany, when the Eider was also established as the northern border of the empire. With this border fortification, part of the area handed over to the Abotrites in 804 was incorporated back into the Frankish Empire, which now bordered the Baltic Sea on a narrow strip between the Levensau and the Schwentine. The border fortifications were further expanded under Louis the Pious, but could not offer lasting protection against raids and conquests by the Abodrites, who were able to penetrate as far as Hamburg and destroyed the city in 1066 and 1072. The raids only ended with the subjugation and Christianization of the Abodrites and the conquest of East Holstein by the Counts of Holstein. The course essentially follows natural obstacles, rivers, swamps and impassable forests and is by no means as clearly defined or even fortified as the Roman Limes. kreis-stormarn.de/files/kreis/geschichte/limes_saxoniae.pdf

A previously unknown section of the ELK. The first half of this tour was particularly beautiful: an old path, with a diverse forest to the left and a breezy bend to the right that repeatedly reveals views of the meadows and fields beyond. The return tour along the canal probably needs no special praise. CAUTION! The start of the path …
