The garden is located in a walled space that abuts the remains of the city wall.
It is the former garden of the Augustinians who managed the Hospital of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. They grew vegetables, medicinal plants, ornamental plants, dye plants and the like that they needed for their hospital work. The botanical garden surrounds an apple orchard.
In 2014, the Herbarium was expanded with the Fruticetum, which is actually a contemporary interpretation of the medieval gardens. The shapes of the garden are emphasized by the color blue, from the woad, a textile dye plant. The grid pattern is accentuated by fruit trees.
