Palais Longchamp

Highlight • Monument

The Palais Longchamp is a must-see in Marseille: with its magnificent park, this historic monument built to bring water to the city is a true architectural feat.
In 1835, a cholera epidemic struck the Phocaean city due to a water shortage. It was after this tragedy that civil engineer Franz Mayor de Montricher carried out a 16th-century project. The project involved digging an 85-kilometer canal to bring water from the Durance River to Marseille.
After 10 years of construction, 18 aqueducts were built to transport drinking water. Architect Henry Espérandieu, known for designing the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, depicts the arrival of water on the Lonchamp plateau, which comprised it from 1682 to 1869.
Two museums are located on either side of the building: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History.
Behind its majestic façade, the Palais Longchamp hides a garden much frequented by the people of Marseille. It once housed the Marseille Zoo, of which only the remains remain.
