Baszta Kowalska (Smith's Tower) is the best-preserved structure of the former Royal Castle of Nowy Sącz and is considered one of the most important medieval monuments in the region. The defensive tower was likely built in the 15th century as part of the town's fortifications and owes its name to the blacksmiths' guild, which was responsible for its defense. The castle itself was expanded in the 14th century under King Casimir the Great and served to protect the important trade route between Poland and Hungary.

After the castle's destruction in 1945, Baszta Kowalska remained as one of the few surviving structures. In recent years, the tower has been carefully restored and made accessible to visitors. Today, it houses a small exhibition with archaeological finds, historical information, and a reconstruction of medieval castle life. From the defensive platform, there is also a beautiful view of the town and the confluence of the Dunajec and Kamienica rivers.

Baszta Kowalska is now a popular destination and an impressive testament to Nowy Sącz's eventful history. A visit can be excellently combined with a walk through the old town or along the VeloDunajec cycle path.
