Nivernais Canal Greenway — From Clamecy to Pousseaux

Highlight (Segment) • Other

Greenway of the Niverais canal, very well developed, between Clamecy and Pousseaux. The track is tarmac, however you should not expect a smooth surface.

Between the two towns, you can see the climbing cliffs and the very beautiful Chartreuse de Basseville.

Historic centre of Clamecy

Highlight • Historical Site

The town of Clamecy has some old medieval buildings, walks along the Yonne and a museum retracing the epic tale of log floating. You will find some nice restaurants at the foot of the collegiate church and in the city center. The cathedral is superb and deserves some time.

Cuncy Castle

Highlight • Other

Cuncy Castle is an old fortified house built at the beginning of the 11th century. Remodeled in the 15th and 16th centuries, it was partly destroyed in 1592, when Vézelay's troops besieged Clamecy.

The castle was rebuilt around 1610, on the site of the old curtain walls. A turret is added to the keep. The castle was acquired in 1846 by Edmé Goyard and his descendants are still the owners. It has an impressive porch tower. It cannot be visited and is located near the village of Villiers-sur-Yonne.

Canal de Nivernais Towpath

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful, sometimes sunny, sometimes shady, stretch of the Canal de Nivernais. Great to drive with children, varied through locks of different types, bascule bridges or pretty "Fermes" left and right

La Chartreuse de Basseville

Highlight • Historical Site

The former Chartreuse de Basseville is listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. Built on the banks of the Yonne and the Nivernais canal, it was transformed into a farm after the Revolution.

The building and its gardens are being renovated. They visit each other in June during the “Rendez-vous aux Jardins” event.
