Capanne Tower, Castro

Highlight • Historical Site

Messapian walls of the Aragonese Castle which is located in the heart of the city. The name of the village itself means 'fortified city', a protected area both on the coast and inland. Stretching out towards the sea, but part of the imposing internal structure, is the Torre Capanne, located south-east of the city walls, in the town from which it takes its name.

Byzantine Basilica of Castro

Highlight • Religious Site

Posted in Byzantine Salento collection komoot.it/collection/1811756/-salento-bizantino - I believe that most of the Byzantine frescoes are visible outside the cathedral. they are very easily identifiable because they are exposed towards the square present there. Some well-preserved frescoes are also visible in the side entrance to the cathedral. Castro, a charming village rich in history. hotelpanoramico.net/salento/87-la-cattedrale-di-castro-un-capolavoro-nato-sulle-rovine-di-antichi-luoghi-di-culto

Castro Castle

Highlight • Trail

Once a fortress of strategic importance for the defense of the coast, the Castle of Castro tells the glories of a glorious past. Built in the XVI century on a pre-existing structures (almost certainly on the remains of a Byzantine building used to defense of the fortified Roman village), it's still possible to see a circular tower, a lanceolate bastion, the "Torre del Cavaliere" and some sections of curtain walls. Inside persists a large rectangular courtyard, that once housed the handicrafts and agricultural products that were marketed throughout the Mediterranean. Since 1780 the castle fell into a state of disrepair. After about two centuries of neglect, three distinct architectural recovery interventions were finally carried out over the last twenty years.

Minervino Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

The Minervino Tower is part of a complex of lookout points built by Charles V in the 16th century to prevent attacks by the Saracens. The system guaranteed the possibility of communicating between one tower and another through visual signals, fires at night and smoke during the day, so that the whole coast was alerted as soon as enemy ships were sighted from one of the towers. In this context, the Torre Minervino is fundamental as it manages to cover the sea area around Punta Palascia, the easternmost point of Puglia and Italy. Given the limited space inside the structure, it is believed that the sentries did not stay inside the tower but that they took over for guard duty. The tower was restored around 2010.
