Pont-à-Mousson Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Built between 1786 and 1791, Pont-à-Mousson's town hall is a fine example of late 18th-century French architecture. The elegant façade, with its symmetrical layout and classical columns, was completed by sculptors Johann Joseph Söntgen and Joseph Labroise.
The building stands on Place Duroc, the lively heart of the city, and together with the surrounding arcades, it provides a beautiful setting for a short break or a photo.

The name of the city says it all: Pont-à-Mousson was created around this bridge over the Moselle. Since the Middle Ages, it has connected the old town with the Mousson hill. The current bridge, rebuilt several times after floods and wars, offers a beautiful view of the abbey and the river.
📍 Tip: Take a moment to pause in the middle of the bridge – on the left the baroque abbey, on the right the lively Place Duroc.

Premonstratensian Abbey Pont-à-Mousson

Highlight • Religious Site

The former Premonstratensian abbey of Sainte-Marie-Majeure (Great Saint Mary) in Pont-à-Mousson, a municipality in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the French region of Grand Est (formerly Lorraine), was built in the early 18th century in the Baroque style. The abbey, which covers an area of 12,000 square meters, is considered one of the most important monastery complexes in Lorraine. In 1910, the church and parts of the abbey, and in 1919 the entire monastery complex, were added to the list of architectural monuments (Base Mérimée) in France as a monument historique (Wikipedia).

The exterior of the abbey is very impressive, the interior even less so. The complex was actually converted into a hotel. For € 10 per person, you see relatively little and it is actually a demolition!

This imposing 18th-century abbey is one of the finest examples of baroque monastic architecture in Lorraine. Once the headquarters of the Order of the Premonstratensians, the building now houses a cultural centre and a hotel.
Situated on the banks of the Moselle, between Metz and Nancy, the abbey offers a unique mix of heritage, art and tranquillity. The gardens, monumental staircase and cloisters are open to the public and are an impressive stopover for any bike tour.

The route on the Moselle in France is well developed and signposted along the entire route. Since France also has decent WLAN FIWI everywhere, you can find everything that is possible. The Moselle is much less populated and very relaxing no matter where.
