The Faule See (Lazy Lake) is the remnant of what was once a much larger wetland and marsh area northeast of the city. Like many other Berlin bodies of water, it owes its existence to a block of dead ice. Just a hundred years ago, the area was part of the rural outskirts of the city; today, it is completely surrounded by the urban area.

The first ornithological publication in 1931 drew attention to the area's value as a bird sanctuary. As early as 1933, the area around the Faule See was designated a nature reserve, making it one of Berlin's oldest. The lake is surrounded by a mixed deciduous forest with a very primeval character. The nature reserve is cool and damp, differing significantly from the climate of the surrounding metropolis. Reedbeds and typical willow and alder stands can be admired along the lakeshores. Many of the area's endangered plant species grow in the silted-up areas. The lake and its shores also serve as breeding and resting grounds for rare waterfowl species. 142 bird species have been recorded here, 80 of them regularly. This nature reserve, located in the city center and surrounded by busy roads, is an island of tranquility.
