Ghost Riders Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

I remember this tragedy at the time, it put a lot of us off cycling.
Ghost riders.
On 21st December 1997, three cyclists (two brothers and the brother-in-law of one of them) were killed by a drunken driver on the adjacent A193. One more cyclist survived with a broken leg. The driver was subsequently jailed for seven years for causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving. This sculpture was erected about 2002 next to the coastal walkway which was built through the dunes from Seaton Sluice to Blyth at about the same time.

Much nicer view by taking this small diversion off the main road - worth the extra metres!
