Dunin Oak

It is a remnant of the Ladzka Forest and one of several monumental oaks located in these areas. This tree used to have a more slender shape, but as a result of lightning strikes it lost several branches and its crown changed slightly. Dunin's age is estimated at around 400 years. The oak has been a natural monument since 2001, but for centuries it has been admired by local residents and tourists visiting this region of Poland.
The name Dunin was given to it by Janusz Korbel in honor of the Belarusian poet and playwright Wincenty Dunin Marcinkiewicz. Interestingly, this pedunculate oak was previously called the Guardian of the Białowieża Forest.
In 2021, the ancient oak won the Polish edition of the Tree of the Year competition organized by the Gaja Club, thus securing its participation in the European competition. In 2022, it became the European Tree of the Year.
