Unique suspension bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This wrought iron bridge is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. It dates from 1824 and was built according to a design by the Brussels engineer Jean Baptist Vifquain. It was a unique concept for that time. The bridge bears witness to the industrial revolution that came to Flanders via England.

Despite the modest span of 20.5 meters, the bridge is of great industrial-archaeological value. She has retained her original columns, porches, chain elements and railings; only the tread has been replaced. It was opened to the public in 2012 after restoration.

The Fassaat

Highlight • Historical Site

Historical location: In 1738, sworn land surveyor Vandevelde drew this map showing the situation in Basel and Rupelmonde after the great flood of 1715 and the repair of the dikes in 1718. He called this triangular piece of land next to Kallebeek "Fasseyt". An understandable mistake. The Bazelers called this piece the "Fassaat" and he thought that was dialect for Fasseyt. but that's not how this area got its name.
At the time of the reclamation in the 12th and 13th centuries, this triangle was not reclaimed, but it was provided with a canal that ran from the Scheldt inland to the point of the triangle to load and unload ships there, closer to the village of Basel in the castle of Wissekerke. "Fossa" and "fossatum" means in Latin: with a moat. Fossatum became Fossate and finally Fassate. Hence comes the name of this historic location.

Polders of Kruibeke

Highlight • Natural

The polders of Kruibeke are the largest flood plain in Flanders. And yet they are only really flooded a few times a year.

When the water recedes here, a world of natural beauty opens up for you. With mudflats and salt marshes, alder forests, thousands of meadow and water birds. You can see deer, beavers and with a bit of luck even otters.

Have you heard of the Sigma Plan? This ingenious plan creates floodplains along the Scheldt to protect inhabited areas from flooding. When the water level of the river rises, the lock gates of the overflow dike open. And that produces beautiful scenes, even with waterfalls that bring enormous amounts of water towards nature reserve. When the water recedes, mudflats and salt marshes remain. Nature thrives here and beautiful landscapes unfold with fertile vegetation and animal inhabitants.

Not to be missed is the beaver trail, which takes you 1.2 kilometers along the Rupelmondse Kreek!
