Saint-Hubert Church of Han-sur-Lesse

Highlight • Religious Site

The Église Saint-Hubert in Han-sur-Lesse is a neo-Gothic parish church dating from 1905, built to replace an older church dating from 1775. It is a characteristic religious building in the heart of the village, designed by architects Clément Léonard and Hubert Froment.
The church is a three-aisled structure of natural stone, located on the Lesse River in the Belgian Ardennes. It was consecrated on June 20, 1783, by an auxiliary bishop of Liège and completely rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. The architecture reflects the typical features of that style: pointed arches, vertical lines, and a simple yet stately appearance.

Tramway of the Caves of Han

Highlight • Structure

The Han Caves tramway also known as line 521B or line 974 is a Belgian local tramway line created by royal decree in 1905 and opened to the public on June 1, 1906. Originally it was a connection to the Wellin – Rochefort line from Wellin’s group. It connected the center of the village of Han-sur-Lesse to the Rochers de Faule.

Today, this non-electrified meter gauge line is operated for tourism and serves the Caves of Han.

Cave of Han-sur-Lesse

Highlight • Cave

The cave is one of the most famous show caves in Europe. Particularly interesting are the slender stalactite columns in its central part, the number of which is only surpassed by a few stalactite caves.

Le Belvédère Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Belvedere offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the region, a typical Famenne landscape with the Ardennes horizon in the distance.

This area is protected for both its beauty and its flora and fauna. At your feet lie the exceptional 'dry valley' or 'chavée', or more simply, the former bed of the Lesse River, as well as the wooded Boine massif, which is dome-shaped and in which the river has carved the Han Caves.
Until 100,000 years ago, the Lesse followed this wide meander before finding an easier underground path, thus creating the Belvaux chasm, where it plunges into the limestone of the massif through a vertiginous siphon some fifty meters deep. This is 'the river's disappearance'. It reappears 2 km further on at the exit of the caves. The chasm fills up as soon as the water flow exceeds 25,000 liters per second, the river reclaims its old meander and once again bypasses the Boine massif, flooding the surrounding villages. The inhabitants of Han then say that 'the water is turning'.

Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Han-sur-Lesse is a modern limestone chapel dating from 1961, built as a place of prayer and contemplation in a natural setting. It is located on Rue du Plan d’Eau, near the Lesse River.
The chapel is built in a simple, contemporary style with local natural stone, giving it a subdued and peaceful atmosphere. It was founded as a place of devotion in honor of Mary, inspired by the apparitions in Lourdes. Its green setting and proximity to a picnic area make it a popular stop for hikers and pilgrims.

King Baudouin Linden

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Tilleul Roi Baudouin in Han-sur-Lesse is a memorial linden planted in 1990 next to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lourdes, in honor of King Baudouin's 60th birthday and 40 years of reign. The tree stands in an open lawn on Rue du Plan d’Eau and is accompanied by a commemorative plaque. Its location, next to the serene chapel, underscores the symbolic nature of this planting as a sign of community solidarity and respect.
