Sloten Historic Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Very well maintained, cute little town with typical Frisian charm - so idyllic that it is almost unbelievable. Especially nice: walk along the canal, admire the brick houses with their gables and watch the boats sail by.

The Luts Canal in Balk

Highlight • River

Balk has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. The village developed along the Luts, a historic river that was traditionally important for shipping. In the 19th century, Balk became a centre of the dairy industry, and the village flourished due to the many farms that processed their products here. This heritage is still visible in the authentic buildings and the rural character of the village.

Woudsend

Highlight • Settlement

The village was founded in the High Middle Ages on the western bank of the Ee. Woudsend became independent in the early eleventh century. Due to the growth and attraction for shipping, shipbuilding and woodworking, the village acquired a small-town character. In the 19th century the village continued to grow on the other side of the water. In the 20th century the village developed as a water sports resort.

In 1337 Woudsend was mentioned as Woldesende, in 1446 as Woldensend, in 1447 as Waldeseende, in 1492 as Woldsende, in 1505 as Wolseyndt, in 1516 as Walseyndt, in 1520 as Waldzein and in 1579 as Waldsem. The place name refers to the edge or end of a forest.

Picturesque Streets of Woudsend

Highlight • Settlement

From the point in this highlight, the church and mill form a beautiful ensemble. The Midstjittje should also be walked along the entire length because the individual houses are decorated very individually. Definitely worth seeing! 😍

It was supposed to be a fairly dry day (we're happy with less). So we quickly picked a small route and got on our bikes. In Sneek, the one (!) rain cloud 🌧 caught up with us, so we had to take shelter at a gas station (there are still bp here). After this forced break, we really got going. …
