Saccagnana Canal

Highlight • River

This walk leads us to the discovery of the three islands of Saccagnana, Portosecco and Treporti, winding through narrow streets that enter the urban fabric of the area, sometimes offering suggestive glimpses that open onto the horizons of the lagoon, contrasted by the warm colors of the rural landscape with the vegetable gardens and gardens separated by hedges and rows. A route with changing characteristics: wide valley mirrors, rich in fish, and salt marshes and mudflats, an ideal nesting place for various bird species.

Fort Treporti

Highlight • Historical Site

Also known as Forte Vecchio and built on the ruins of a pre-existing French fort, it was constructed by the Austrians in the second half of the 19th century (1845–1851) to control the lagoon and the Punta Sabbioni harbor entrance. Located a suitable distance from Venice, it was equipped with adequate anti-ship armament on the seaward side, but also had passive defense artillery facing the Venice lagoon. During the Great War, two rangefinder towers were built, one cylindrical and the other square, designed to spot the enemy and calculate the direction of fire.
Today, Forte Treporti is partially inhabited, and its premises have become home to several sports and cultural associations.

MOSE Flood Barrier System

Highlight • Structure

The Mose Project (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) (MO.S.E. for short) is an almost completed storm surge barrier made of movable flood gates. It is installed at the three openings (Italian: bocche) of the Venice lagoon and is intended to protect the historic center of Venice from floods (Italian: Acqua Alta) from autumn 2020. The acronym MO.S.E also stands for the Italian word Mosè, which recalls the biblical prophet Moses, who divided the waters of the Red Sea when he left Egypt. [1] The barrage with 78 movable flood gates is the largest infrastructure project of the post-war period in Italy and has so far cost over six billion euros (as of 2020). [2]
