Châtenois on the Wine Route, Châtenois on the Wine Route

Highlight • Other

Châtenois, ideally located on the Wine Route, is a fortified city with a unique charm. Two enclosures surround the town, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. Ramparts staged each year during the traditional “Fête des Remparts” in June:

These places are listed as Historic Monuments thanks in particular to the Witches' Tower, a 15th century Gothic tower gate located on the second enclosure; and the 18th century St Georges Church. Push open the door of the latter where you will discover one of the masterpieces of the organ builder Silbermann.
From the church, walk on the interpretive trail along the ramparts then go down towards the heart of the town. Get lost in the streets and let yourself be seduced by the typical Alsatian houses where geraniums bloom on the balconies every summer.
You can also explore the surrounding cycle paths during the annual Slow Up in June: slowup-alsace.fr

End your walk with a visit to the cellars and stop at one of the town's good restaurants which offer different local specialties such as tarte flambée.

Great view but unfortunately also very crowded. Nothing, despite I'll maybe do the tour again 🤔 I'll have better luck with the view and fewer people 👍

The Haut-Koenigsbourg, whose contraction means the king's high castle, offers hikers and lovers of fortified castles a gateway to the Middle Ages.
Built in the 12th century, it has undergone several renovations over the years.

It is the highest castle on the trail of the fortified castles of Alsace which once marked the border between France and Germany. Its privileged position offers unobstructed views of the plain of Alsace, the Black Forest and sometimes even the Alps.

If we imagine the strategic advantage that this represented in times of war, we can take advantage today of this boon for the simple pleasure of the eyes.

Rather steep descent, but good quality roads! It's worth being careful of the other vehicles sharing the road, but it's certainly an enjoyable descent after a long and hefty climb!

Saint-Hippolyte Village

Highlight • Settlement

Nestled in the heart of the Alsace wine region, the village of Saint-Hippolyte is a picturesque destination for cycling enthusiasts. As you cycle through its charming narrow streets, you’ll be surrounded by traditional half-timbered houses, some of which are brightly coloured. The village is located at the foot of the Vosges Mountains, with the imposing Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle in the background, adding a touch of medieval grandeur to the landscape.
