Premonstratensian Abbey Pont-à-Mousson

Highlight • Religious Site

The former Premonstratensian abbey of Sainte-Marie-Majeure (Great Saint Mary) in Pont-à-Mousson, a municipality in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the French region of Grand Est (formerly Lorraine), was built in the early 18th century in the Baroque style. The abbey, which covers an area of 12,000 square meters, is considered one of the most important monastery complexes in Lorraine. In 1910, the church and parts of the abbey, and in 1919 the entire monastery complex, were added to the list of architectural monuments (Base Mérimée) in France as a monument historique (Wikipedia).

The exterior of the abbey is very impressive, the interior even less so. The complex was actually converted into a hotel. For € 10 per person, you see relatively little and it is actually a demolition!

This imposing 18th-century abbey is one of the finest examples of baroque monastic architecture in Lorraine. Once the headquarters of the Order of the Premonstratensians, the building now houses a cultural centre and a hotel.
Situated on the banks of the Moselle, between Metz and Nancy, the abbey offers a unique mix of heritage, art and tranquillity. The gardens, monumental staircase and cloisters are open to the public and are an impressive stopover for any bike tour.

It was a nice trip on the Moselle. It was new territory for us. We know the route from Koblenz to Metz. Now we drove on from Metz and discovered another Moselle. It was a nice bike path. Mostly tarred. The landscape is wonderful in both directions. Unfortunately, my sat nav got a little crazy with the altitude information. The …

Also in this case we prefer to pedal slightly uphill, but with the wind behind us. Fascinating near Jouy-aux-Arches, the remains of the Roman aqueduct, which still dominates some houses. Metz deserves a thorough visit. From the imposing Saint-Étienne Cathedral to numerous other small and large buildings that characterize the medieval old town 🏰.
The itinerary starts from the Municipal …

Third stage first part, on the way to Lyon. Super tour, very well described, great bike paths. Although in this section, part of the Veloroute was closed due to construction work, after a small stretch of road, we could take the next entrance, no problem. Metz and Pont a Mousson: very good infrastructure for cyclists. I can only recommend.
