Monastery of San Juan de Duero

Highlight • Religious Site

One of my favorite places in Soria. Pure magic that deserves a visit. The originality of the Monastery of San Juan de Duero makes it one of the most recognized and representative jewels of the Spanish Romanesque.

Declared a national monument in August 1882, it stands out for its impressive cloister, which preserves a collection of styles in its most surprising execution. Romanesque, Mudejar, Arab shake hands in their arches, adding to their beauty the uniqueness of being different from each other.
The originality of this cloister makes it unique in Spain... How about a visit?
It was built by the Order of the Hospitallers of San Juan de Acre, between the 12th and 13th centuries, on the outskirts of the city of Soria, next to the Duero River.
Of the old Romanesque monastery of San Juan de Duero, only the church and a splendid cloister with mixed influences remain.
It is a cloister with a quadrangular open-air structure of which we highlight its four arches of different order, which are surprising for their crisscrossing and the capitals sculpted with medieval fantasy.

The church is simple, with a single nave and a semicircular apse, the nave is closed with a pointed barrel vault and the apse with a furnace vault.

Numantia Archaeological Site

Highlight • Historical Site

Numancia was a Celtiberian city located on a hill at the confluence of the Duero, Tera and Merdancho rivers.
The city became famous in the 2nd century BC. C. for resisting for 20 years the continuous attacks of Rome that sent one general after another being terribly humiliated.
However, the city would be sentenced when Rome sent Publius Cornelius Scipio who would build a 9 km fence defended by towers and 7 camps and after 11 months of siege the Numantines surrendered, but not before setting the city on fire.
After this, the city would be repopulated by the Romans but during the Visigoth period it would be definitively abandoned.
Today much of the site has been excavated and you can visit it through a tour.
I recommend going on Tuesdays because the other days you have to pay admission.

Co-Cathedral of San Pedro de Soria

Highlight • Religious Site

The Co-Cathedral of San Pedro de Soria symbolizes a jewel of the Castilian Romanesque. It is located in the northeast part of the city of Soria, very close to the Duero River.

It is essential to visit its beautiful cloister.
